Set the box to the finished wall depth rather than the stud face, since a recessed box means an unsupported device and a plate that will not sit flat. Depth is what usually decides the box — a shallow box behind a device with several conductors makes the connections hard to fold and harder to inspect. Metal and non-metallic boxes are not interchangeable: the wiring method, bonding and the clamps the box accepts all follow from that choice.
