Box fill is a calculation, not a judgement call: conductors, devices and clamps each count, and an overfilled box is one of the most common inspection failures. Depth is what usually decides the box — a shallow box behind a device with several conductors makes the connections hard to fold and harder to inspect. Set the box to the finished wall depth rather than the stud face, since a recessed box means an unsupported device and a plate that will not sit flat.
