Depth is what usually decides the box — a shallow box behind a device with several conductors makes the connections hard to fold and harder to inspect. Box fill is a calculation, not a judgement call: conductors, devices and clamps each count, and an overfilled box is one of the most common inspection failures. Set the box to the finished wall depth rather than the stud face, since a recessed box means an unsupported device and a plate that will not sit flat.
